Food in books, #1

From Holding still for as long as possible, by Zoe Whittall:

“I never followed recipes; baking was mostly science and intuition anyway. If you understood the basics and had a keen sense of pleasure, you were pretty much set. Like with sex.”

aaaaaaggggggghhhhhhhhh! I have never understood the food/sex analogy. I mean, I get where people are trying to go with it, both can be sensuous, and both can make you feel horrible when it all goes wrong.

I would argue that “the basics” of sex vary wildly from person to person, and this type of generalization can be quite harmful and reinforce dumb stereotypes: I’m thinking specifically of a woman I know who constantly complains about, then dumps her boyfriends, when they can’t bring her to orgasm, because that’s the man’s job — she has no idea how to bring herself to orgasm because masturbating is only what losers who can’t get boyfriends do, and if a guy doesn’t know intuitively how to give her pleasure, without any input about what she likes, then it’s all his fault. This is a highly educated (PhD) woman in her mid-thirties. Though apparently not educated in “the basics” of sex, whatever those are….. (Insert A into B, voila?)

Even the definition of what sex is varies from person to person! A lot of people consider vaginal penetration “sex” and completely discount various other sexual activities as “not sex”.

oh look, once again I’ve left a long winded comment that is longer than the actual blog post….
